The Big Boat Class Committee brings to you another highly interesting seminar on ORC.  Zoran Grubisa, ORC Chief Rating Officer, will be the featured speaker.  Find out more about ORC rating methodology and differences/similarities between other rating systems.  The upcoming HHYC Typhoon Series will offer a dual scored IRC/ORC for those boats which can obtain a free trial ORC club certification from ORC.  Due to seminar time constraints, please send your questions in advance to cruiser@rhkyc.org.hk by 30 May.

10 March 2021 Rule 42 Tom Sheppard & Ben Harding

With the Middle Island Open coming up, HKSF and RHKYC have arranged a webinar covering Rule 42 (illegal propulsion, pumping sculling and so on) and on the water judging of infringements.  This will be suitable for all sailors, competitors, coaches and judges.  It is the first part of the ‘On The Water Judging’ qualification for judges who will be continuing with their practical training during the regatta.

This will be an opportunity for a complete look at rule 42, what is allowed and what will get you a flag, and how it is interpreted by on the water judges at major events.  We will discuss what the judges will be looking for and how they position themselves round the racecourse.

The webinar is freely available to all, but if the zoom participant numbers are very large priority will be given to judges who are trying to qualify.

17 November 2020 Protest Committee Workshop Ben Harding

Led by Ben Harding (World Sailing IJ), this Protest Committee Workshop will cover the rules and process to be followed when sitting on a protest committee hearing for Club racing. The workshop will start with a presentation by Ben and then will move to mock PC hearings to put theory into practice. Afterwards, there will be time for the group to share their findings and to ask questions arising from the hearings.

8 April 2019 Arbitration Seminar Tom Sheppard

This is our first seminar to cover Arbitration as applied by the Racing Rules of Sailing Appendix T. Arbitration adds an extra step to the protest resolution process but can eliminate the need for some protest hearings, thus speeding up the process for events in which many protests are expected.

The seminar will cover

  • the background to and process of using arbitration in sailing
  • mock arbitration sessions with participants dividing into groups so that each person has at least one go at arbitrating
  • Q & A

10 July 2018 RYA introduction and briefing on Sail and Shorebased scheme courses Vaughan Marsh Vaughan Marsh, the RYA’s (Royal Yachting Association) Chief Instructor for sail cruising, will be visiting the RHKYC on the 10th July to give a talk on the RYA scheme.  He will provide an overview of the RYA and details of the RYA training scheme from novice to professional qualifications and there will be time at the end to question Vaughan on specific topics of interest.

3 Dec  2016 New Rules Tom Sheppard The new Racing Rules of Sailing 2017 - 2020 go into effect on January 1st, 2017. RHKYC members are invited to join International Judge Tom Sheppard on Saturday 3 December 2016 as he covers the changes included in the new RRS and how they will affect your racing. The seminar will run from 0930 - 1200hrs in the Chart Room, RHKYC Kellett Island, enabling participants time to prepare for the Lipton Trophy that afternoon.
