The Big Boat Class Committee brings to you another highly interesting seminar on ORC.  Zoran Grubisa, ORC Chief Rating Officer, will be the featured speaker.  Find out more about ORC rating methodology and differences/similarities between other rating systems.  The upcoming HHYC Typhoon Series will offer a dual scored IRC/ORC for those boats which can obtain a free trial ORC club certification from ORC.  Due to seminar time constraints, please send your questions in advance to cruiser@rhkyc.org.hk by 30 May.

This seminar will focus on how to be a Race Officer for the regular RHKYC class racing run throughout the year in the Harbour and out of Middle Island and Shelter Cove. This will be a useful refresher for anyone who hasn’t been a RO recently and also of interest to anyone wanting to step up to being a Club RO.

Insurance is on the mind of every big boat owner at least once a year.  With changing weather patterns, more frequent marine theft and a world still recovering from Covid, Insurance is top of mind for Big Boat owners.  We have two experts, Mr. Bob Vart (www.brookesbell.com/company/the-team/team-member/robert-vart), a professional surveyor with Brookes Bell Group and Colin Dawson, a Marine Insurance expert with over 20 years in marine insurance experience, Managing Director, The George Group and with Expat Marine Limited to discuss and provide advice on Marine Insurance. 

With the Middle Island Open coming up, HKSF and RHKYC have arranged a webinar covering Rule 42 (illegal propulsion, pumping sculling and so on) and on the water judging of infringements.  This will be suitable for all sailors, competitors, coaches and judges.  It is the first part of the ‘On The Water Judging’ qualification for judges who will be continuing with their practical training during the regatta.

This will be an opportunity for a complete look at rule 42, what is allowed and what will get you a flag, and how it is interpreted by on the water judges at major events.  We will discuss what the judges will be looking for and how they position themselves round the racecourse.

The webinar is freely available to all, but if the zoom participant numbers are very large priority will be given to judges who are trying to qualify.

This seminar will focus on the race management changes brought in by the 2021 - 2024 Racing Rules of Sailing and will be a useful update for Club ROs and AROs.

A HKSF Seminar, hosted by HHYC, covering the rules changes in the 2021 - 2024 Racing Rules of Sailing.

Led by Ben Harding (World Sailing IJ), this Protest Committee Workshop will cover the rules and process to be followed when sitting on a protest committee hearing for Club racing. The workshop will start with a presentation by Ben and then will move to mock PC hearings to put theory into practice. Afterwards, there will be time for the group to share their findings and to ask questions arising from the hearings.

Each of these Club Race Officer seminars will focus on how to run starts and finishes and also what to watch for during races. The same content will be covered on 23 & 26 June, from 1830 - 2030hrs in the Pat Loseby Room, RHKYC Kellett Island.

Building from previous Club Race Officer seminars, this evening session will focus on the task of course selection for multi-fleet Harbour racing. The seminar will then examine course selection and setting for geometric racing at the Middle Island, Lamma and Shelter Cove racing areas.

This seminar will cover many aspects of race management and will be suitable for people with some RO experience. The seminar will be run by Charlie Manzoni, World Sailing International Race Officer, and will cover: race documents, course selection & setting, starts, finishes, race monitoring and key RO decisions.

This is our first seminar to cover Arbitration as applied by the Racing Rules of Sailing Appendix T. Arbitration adds an extra step to the protest resolution process but can eliminate the need for some protest hearings, thus speeding up the process for events in which many protests are expected.

The seminar will cover

• the background to and process of using arbitration in sailing
• mock arbitration sessions with participants dividing into groups so that each person has at least one go at arbitrating
• Q & A
