About Sharks

ENROLLMENTS FOR THE 2023/24 SEASON ARE NOW OPEN. CLICK HERE TO APPLY

The Sharks is the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's Youth Racing Program. Aimed at providing young sailors with an introduction to the world of dinghy racing and a pathway towards racing in the club's various classes. All our training is located at RHKYC Middle Island and we participate regularly in club dinghy racing and regattas elsewhere around Hong Kong

The Sharks Squad looks for sailors who are keen to learn, want to have fun on the water and thrive in a team-first environment with friends.

Applicants are expected to have completed a learn to sail program prior to joining. A guideline for the minimum requirements is:
Under 12: RHKYC Step 4 + RHKYC Silver Squad experience
Over 12: HKSF Level 2 + some racing / race clinic experience

The Sharks season runs parallel to the sailing season from September to May. Applications for each season open early June to mid-August. Sailors may apply to join mid-season but places are limited and often the team is full.

Sharks Training Policies:
The Sharks Program is built on a team first ethos where sailors are expected to train with, support and motivate each other to achieve success. This is not possible if sailors are not committed to the team. If a sailor is unable to attend training sessions or regattas, they are expected to notify coaches beforehand. Whilst organised Sharks training sessions or Sharks attended regattas (local or overseas) are ongoing, Sharks team sailors will commit to training/racing with the Sharks team and not independantly or under a private coach without seeking permission of the RHKYC Middle Island Sailing and Marine Manager in writing beforehand. Sharks team members must also abide by the RHKYC bye-laws prohibiting the use of private coaches or instructors on site. Any breaches of this policy may be grounds for expulsion from the Sharks.

Sharks Squad requires a lot of commitment. Regularly training is at least one full day per week with the higher performing sailors expected to sail on at least two days per week. We also hold training during the week after school.
