Course Description
Outrigger Canoeing is quickly growing in popularity around the world and is perfectly suited to the warm and scenic waters of the Hong Kong coastline.
Due to high demand the Rowing & Paddle Sports section runs three or more introduction courses yearly. Our 3-hour introduction course includes both a theory and water session. You will learn the basic paddling technique, launching and rigging the canoes, and water safety practices.
The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has an active and competitive paddling team who race frequently in Hong Kong and throughout the Asia Pacific region. This year they plan to race in Hawaii as well as local races.
Come learn the basics and find out more about joining the next step, our NOVICE SQUAD!
The Risks in Outrigger Canoe Paddling (RHKYC)
Outrigger canoe paddling is an ‘open water’ endurance sport. Training and racing occur regularly in the open sea in varying conditions miles offshore. Paddlers need to be prepared for a wide range of open water conditions including large swells, choppy seas, tidal currents, and strong wind.
Capsizes (HULI’s) happen unexpectedly and often. It is expected that the paddler possesses a minimum level of water confidence and swimming ability in open water. Additionally, upper body strength to re-board the canoe and general fitness for endurance paddling is a requirement for safety and injury prevention.
It is strongly advised that every potential paddler evaluate their own physical ability to cope with the challenges and demands that are inherent in the sport.
Paddler Ability Requirement for ‘Safe’ Paddling in the sport of Outrigger Canoe
Members and non-members in the outrigger canoe development course program should be able to demonstrate and complete the following tests:
1. Sucessfully pass a 50m open water swim test and tread water for 2 minutes (un-aided with no assistance or life vest to be worn).
2. Demonstrate the ability to right a capsized canoe (OC1 and OC6).
3. Independently re-board the canoe without assistance (OC1 and OC6).
4. Demonstrate the ability to swim under the canoe and around the canoe.
