Radio Sailing

Radio Sailing has a very long and rich history worldwide, with records showing scaled-down racing yachts being sailed in organised groups in England as far back as the early 1800s.

In a report published in the February issue of MYA News under the heading ‘Remote Control’ in 1953, it drew the attention of all sailors, and Radio Sailing became popular around the world in the mid-1950s.

In the old days, the boats were built with heavy wooden hulls, and now they are made from modern materials and equipped with contemporary telecommunications technologies, making them more durable, faster, and more reliable. These changes have attracted many high-profile yachtsmen, such as Ken Read, the president of North Sails, Olympic sailing medalist Tom Slingsby, and Ed Baird, who have converted to remote-controlled sailboat racing.

Age, gender, or physical condition usually pose no barriers to those wanting to get involved in Radio Sailing. However, the number of Radio Sailing sailors worldwide has grown rapidly over the past 30 years.
