The J/80 is one of the most popular one-design classes in the world with over 1,600 sailing in thirty fleets in twelve countries. There are large fleets in North America, Europe and Asia and here in Hong Kong we have a fleet of twenty privately owned J/80s racing out of our home base at RHKYC Middle Island.
This modern design racing keelboat is well balanced and forgiving in light airs. Once the wind picks up the oversized (67m2) asymmetric spinnaker ensures an exciting ride downwind which requires good crew coordination and skilful helming to keep her on her feet. In heavy winds ‘thrills and spills’ are guaranteed!
Our racing season extends from September until May and includes five Class series. Each series takes place over four race days with three Windward/Leeward races each day. Our Class Championship is held off Lamma Island in December and is made up of eight races. That’s a total of sixty eight Class races which combined with the major Club events in Victoria Harbour makes for a busy season!
We’re always looking for keen racers to join our regular crews. To facilitate this we run a crew WhatsApp group and a Crew Board which is hosted on the Teamer sports management platform. If you’re interested in racing with us please refer to the JOIN US page on our J/80 Class Association website for registration details.
