About

Dragon boat racing is believed to have originated in Southern China more than 2,000 years ago. Originally linked to the traditional Tuen Ng Chinese festival and the fishermen of the region, there are now dragon boat competitions held globally. It is also the only sport to be celebrated as a national holiday on the fifth day of the fifth moon which usually falls on a date in June.

The boats used for racing these days are long and narrow, typically with 20 paddlers seated in 10 rows of two, a steer's person and drummer. Dragon Boats are rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails, and racing accompanied by the beating of a large drum carried aboard.

The RHKYC Team

The RHKYC Royal X Team was founded in 1997 with the vision of building a team that is dedicated to intense training, social events and community service. The Royal X have since evolved into one of the most competitive club’s on the water while never losing sight of the original aims of the team. We have an outstanding team environment both on and off the water. However, most importantly it is our passion for service with community outreach and charitable activities that truly sets the Royal X apart from other clubs.

Though the Club has donated thousands of volunteer hours and dollars over the years, let’s not forget our focus on dragon boat racing! RHKYC now hosts competitions at both Kellett and Middle Islands that are some of the most competitive and exciting “must-do” events in the Hong Kong dragon boat racing calendar.

None of this would be possible without the Club having a world class training and racing program with facilities to match. Our group of certified professional dragon boat coaches offers well structured, holistic programs consisting of off-water endurance, strength & conditioning, cross paddle sports interaction and of course on-water instruction. This gives opportunities for paddlers of all ages and skill levels to meet her or his full potential in a challenging yet fun environment.

The results of this are apparent as many of the Club’s paddlers have achieved success not only by amassing impressive results in local competitions, but also at the highest levels of the sport internationally at both the IDBF Club Crew and World Nations Championships. The 100 plus strong group of Royal X family members each year strive to grow the sport of Dragon Boating and continue the excellence of the program. Come join the fun!
