               Races commence: 2pm sharp

Family Buffet: after prizegiving (approx 3pm)

The Annual Rowing Regatta will take place, by kind permission of the Rowing Section of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, at Middle Island, Deepwater Bay from 12:30pm on Saturday, 18 April, 2015.

This is a very popular family event and guests, children and dogs are most welcome to attend and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of this unique location.  A bar will be available for non-RHKYC members to buy drinks and snacks on the boatshed roof, with splendid views of the course. Please bring Octopus card for this purpose as RHKYC does not accept cash.

The rowing races will commence at 2:00pm sharp with crews representing Oxford, Cambridge, combined alumni and Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.  Some experience of rowing and/or coxing is required but crews will be of mixed ability and fitness.  Individual or crew entries are welcome.  Participants are encouraged to wear their varsity colours and enter into friendly rivalry. "I haven't rowed for 20 years" is not an acceptable excuse! Experienced rowers will have the opportunity to race in Hong Kong’s own “Boat Race” or in a Goldie/Isis boat, but the mood of the day is light-hearted and there will be plenty of opportunity to have a fun row and enjoy the spirit of representing one’s alma mater.

Prizes will be awarded, subject to final entries, on the beautiful lawn of the Clubhouse, followed by a family buffet. A selection of hot and cold meat/fish/vegetarian dishes, soup, desserts, tea/coffee will be served. $250 per person, which includes 2 glasses of house wine/soft drinks/beer.

After the success in previous years of selling Oxbridge rowing related merchandise, this will be available to buy again this year. Please bring cash or cheque to buy postcards, tea towels, T-shirts etc.

Mark the date in your diary, come to Middle Island to enjoy a relaxing Saturday afternoon away from all the hustle and bustle of Central, cheer on your Blue Crew, get your feet wet and let your hair down. You may even win a prize to gloat over at the Boat Race Dinner the following weekend! End the day by watching the sun set over Deepwater Bay over a glass of wine after a sumptuous buffet. You won’t regret it!

Frequently Asked Questions

·       I may be out of town the day of the regatta but I won’t know until a few days before. Is it possible to register on the day?

Yes. Early entries are helpful in pre-organising crews, but it is possible to turn up on the day and register at 12.30pm.

·       Can non-members of Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club attend?

Absolutely. RHKYC rowers are always very welcoming and hospitable!

·       How do I find my way to Middle Island?

The RHKYC website has very detailed instructions, including maps, photos and bus numbers. http://www.rhkyc.org.hk/default.aspx?c=310

·       How much does it cost to enter or spectate?

Rowers/Coxes $100 race fee (RHKYC Rowing Section members free, as race fees are already included in Active Rowers subscription)

Spectators free!

·       How much is the sampan crossing?

It’s free!

·       Can I bring my children?

Definitely. Children are very welcome but please do note that children must strictly be under the supervision of a parent or other designated adult at all times. RHKYC and The Oxford and Cambridge Society of Hong Kong accept no responsibility or liability for the care/safety of your children whilst on RHKYC premises or at the beach.

·       Can I bring my dog?

Yes, on the condition that it is kept on a lead whilst on RHKYC premises, according to Club bye-laws.

·       Can I bring my cigarettes?

Yes, but please don’t smoke them!

·       I have never rowed before. Can I try at the regatta?

For safety reasons there won’t be a chance for complete novices to row on this occasion but RHKYC runs regular novice courses which non-members can attend. Please contact the RHKYC Rowing Coach for details. But please do come and support the crews and enjoy the atmosphere over some drinks and friendship.

·       What happens if it’s raining?

In the event of inclement weather, a decision will be made by the organisers by midday. Very often the weather in Central can be quite different to that on the Southside and a passing shower need not result in the regatta being postponed. Pls call or text Gail or Sarah if in any doubt. If the regatta does need to be postponed for any reason, you will receive a text from the organisers, therefore please ensure that you supply your mobile phone number when registering.

·       Anything else I ought to know?

RHKYC rules state that no mobile phones may be used on Club premises and no domestic helpers are allowed on Club premises.
