The criteria of the Wilson Cup award were that he/she must be a Club member - Junior and/or cadet, have raced regularly over the race season for the Club or another acknowledged club, have represented the Club at least twice over the year, have taken some role in nurturing other youth rowers for the development of the sport in Hong Kong, be an excellent ambassador for RHKYC youth rowing, especially in relation to good sportsmanship and being a role model and be a country national representative or obtain outstanding results in international competition. For his performance over the last season this award went to James Wong.
James’ achievement was indeed outstanding, with his most notable performance being in the lightweight men’s eight winning a bronze medal whilst representing Hong Kong in the 2018 Asian Games. In the lead up to the Asian Games, whilst representing Hong Kong, James won a gold medal in the men’s lightweight four and in the men’s lightweight eight at the Ratzeburg International Regatta in Germany and a silver medal in the men’s lightweight four and bronze medal in the men’s lightweight eight at Holland Beker – Dutch Open Championships. The Wilson Cup award was then presented to James Wong by Mr Wilson and Mr Woo.
The Commodore advised that the criteria for the next award, the Wilson Bowl, were that the candidate must be a club member, junior and/or cadet, must show an obvious commitment to the sport of rowing and to self improvement, have had good attendance at the various youth regattas, both on land (indoor rowing) and water and should show an overall improvement in the year. This award went jointly to Oliver Blyth and Nicholas Chan this year for their commitment to Club rowing and their development over the last season. They have improved both individually and as a crew throughout the season with notable performances in the Middle Island Rowing Race Series and at the Biwako Junior Regatta in Kyoto, Japan. Their commitment and determination is admirable, with both of them being role models for their peers in the Youth Rowing Development Squad. The Wilson Bowl award was then presented to Oliver Blyth and Nicholas Chan by Mr Wilson and Mr Woo.
