2025 Sam Kelly Memorial Award

Athena Kung

The General Committee agreed that the award should go to Athena Kung for her commitment to the Club.

Athena first started rowing in 2016 at university and rowed exclusively on sweep boats during that time. After graduation, Athena returned to Hong Kong and started Fine Rowing with the Club under the development program in 2021. She was encouraged to pick up sculling and joined the sculling course at Middle Island in 2022. She returned to Fine Rowing as a Development rower afterwards and joined other events organized by the Rowing Section as a participant and / or volunteer. At these events, she had the chance to meet more people from the Club and was later encouraged to join as a Member. She joined the Club as a Junior Members in December 2022 with the personal goal to keep rowing and try volunteering with the Club.

From July 2022 to June 2025, Athena served on the Young Members Committee which gave her invaluable experience and opportunities to give back and actively participate in the RHKYC community. She also sat on Middle Island Sub-Committee and Rowing Committee meetings as a YMC observer which helped her better understand the Club on an operations level. Additionally, during her three years with the YMC she also helped to liaise and author several Ahoy! articles recapping the Committee’s events and activities during the year.

Athena’s vision for the Club is to continue being a Club for everyone – rowers, paddlers and sailors as a cohesive unity. She was first introduced to the Club through its many rowing activities, but she has since tried sailing, and she looks forward to joining KGS’ and other non-core sports’ activities as well.
