2023 Sam Kelly Memorial Award

Abigail Watt

The Commodore advised that the General Committee had agreed that the award should go to Abigail Watt for her commitment to the Club. Coming from a long history of coxing competitive rowing crews, Abigail deeply believes in the ability of sport and competition to foster strong connections and lifelong friendships. Those relationships are built through sweat and struggle when people come together to build crews and persevere through tough sessions and rough races to come out better and faster on the other side. Her vision and goal for RHKYC’s rowing section is to use her coxing skills to facilitate large crews coming together to train and race on a regular basis, enabling the creation of those friendships. Since 2020, she has coxed and raced 8+s across multiple seasons, with some established crews coming out to practice three times a week throughout the racing season. Last year, the Men’s Open 8+ she coxed at the Hong Kong Rowing Championships won gold – the first time RHKYC had won this event at the most competitive race of the year. It is her goal to continue to foster this engagement and do her best to help enable these crews to go out, creating a stronger community of rowers. The Samantha Kelly Memorial Award was then presented to Ms Abigail Watt.
