On behalf of the Club, the Commodore congratulated Mr Vie Locke who had been nominated to receive the Noel Croucher Award 2010 for his truly exceptional contributions to sailing.
The Commodore advised that Mr Vic Locke was the owner of several yachts including Vanguard and Golden Delight, which he regularly sailed in the Club's regattas. For the offshore races organised by the Club, he had been Radio Operator for many years on Moonblue 2, which was often used as the fleet radio control boat, and had completed around 30 offshore Category 1 races, including but not limited to, China Sea Race, San Fernando Race, Hong Kong to Vietnam Race and Sydney Hobart Race.
Mr Locke was one of the founders of the San Fernando Race which was first staged in 1977, stepping down as chairman after the 2005 race to make way for younger blood. Mr Locks still serves on the San Fernando Foundation Limited, which oversees the charity aspect of the race, supporting the Home of Loving Faithfulness orphanage in San Fernando.
A member of Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club since 1974, Mr Locke has served on innumerable committees, including Wine Panel (1997-1998), Sponsorship and Public Relations Committee (1985-1988) Membership Committee'(1981-1989) and General Committee (1985-1994), culminating in his election as Commodore of the Club from 1992 to 1994.
The Commodore then presented the award to Mr Vie Locke.
Mr Locke thanked the Commodore, noting that he had met Noel Croucher many years previously at a Macau Race Prizegiving, while receiving a minor prize. Mr Locke went on to say that he had always had the utmost respect for Mr Croucher, particularly for his efforts to rebuild the Club after the war which had led to the development of the Club environment which Members all enjoy today. Mr Locke thanked the Sailing Committee and General Committee for the award, which he accepted with pride, and asked that above all, the Club remember the man that the award is named.
