The ‘Young Sailor of the Year’ award goes to Zihan Helen Liu. Helen has continued her excellent form in the Optimist from past seasons by completing what has been her best season yet. 1st place in almost every HK regata (HKODA Nationals, Southside Regatta, Hong Kong Race Week and HHYC Open Dinghy Regata) and capped off with a 4th place in the female division of the IODA North American Championships. Beyond these results, Helen has proven to be one of the most valuable members of the Sharks team through non-results related actions. This past year she has grown as a leader and can often be seen helping younger sailors, setting a positive example for those around her and displaying commitment and perseverance in training and in racing. Helen has always been a talented racer but this year she has expanded that ability to one that leads all those around her by example.
This year that honour goes to Jorge Wong.
Jorge has been part of the shark team for 4 years, when he joined the optimist fleet. Last season he made the difficult decision and stepped away from the Optimist a year early and made the large jump to the ILCA 4 to try and gain a step forward in the fleet he has been targeting for years. He is a passionate sailor and sailing is now part of his lifestyle. Last year he joined all 4 ILCA events in HK which proved to be extremely challenging early on. Since he stepped on the ILCA 4, thanks to his commitment, effort and passion, his sailing skills have improved greatly and he is considered as one of our most promising sailors. Also remarkable is his great atitude with team mates, punctuality and politeness.
Raphael and Louis have put together a consistent string of good results both in Hong Kong and abroad during the past season.
