The ‘Young Sailor of the Year’ award for 2021 went to Julian Hill. Julian is one of the most committed sailors achieving good results at local events throughout the season. Julian at all times encourages and helps his fellow teammates as much as possible. He was also recognised as one the Clubs best assistant sailing instructors. Julian recently moved to Canada for university, and it was hoped he would be back either sailing or teaching again in Hong Kong very soon. The Tom Larmour ‘Young Sailor of the Year’ award will be presented to Julian Hill upon his return to Hong Kong.
The Commodore advised that the criteria for the next award, ‘Most Promising Young Sailor’, are that the candidate should have a very high attendance as a competitor in dinghy races, show great improvement in race results throughout the year and be a keen learner who shows a great commitment to sailing. This award went to Zihan Liu. Zihan is a very dedicated youth Shark’s sailor who attended every training session and was always hungry to learn. Currently she is the top ranked 11-year-old Optimist sailor in Hong Kong and the third female overall. The Tom Larmour ‘Most Promising Young Sailor’ trophy was then presented to Zihan Liu.
The Commodore advised that the purely results-based ‘RHKYC Sharks Performance Sailor of the Year’ award went jointly to Julia Jacobsen and Duncan Gregor this year. Julia and Duncan attended three events in Europe over the summer despite Covid disruptions. They managed to finish 20th out of 112 teams in the 420 Junior European regatta and 17th at the 420 World Championship, in the mixed division out of 90 competitors. The RHKYC Sharks Performance Sailor of the Year award was then presented to Julia Jacobsen, and Duncan Gregor who is currently in the UK, will be presented with the award upon his return to Hong Kong.
