2018 Tom Larmour Awards

Sailor of the Year - Eloi Defline

The ‘Young Sailor of the Year’ award for 2018 went to Eloi Defline. Eloi’s sportsmanship and mentoring were beyond expectations in all cases which made him a leading example for all the new generation of sailors who were inspired by him. Through hard work he has achieved great results over the past year in the Optimist fleet. His achievements this season were 11th at Top of the Gulf, 14th at ASAF Youth Cup Thailand and 22nd at Youth Sailing Championship in Singapore. The Tom Larmour ‘Young Sailor of the Year’ trophy was then presented to Eloi Defline.

Most Promising Sailor - Douglas Leung

The Commodore advised that the criteria for the next award, ‘Most Promising Young Sailor’, were that the candidate should have a very high attendance as a competitor in dinghy races, show great improvement in race results throughout the year and be a keen learner who shows a great commitment to sailing. This award went to Douglas Leung. Douglas has shown great improvement in the past two years with the peak of his performance being his qualification in the silver fleet at the IODA Worlds this summer. He has shown great commitment in the Sharks programme and a great work ethic. This summer he had to have extra tutoring during the summer holidays in order to catch up with his school work since he had missed three weeks of school during the pre-worlds and the World Championship. Some of his achievements this season in the Optimist class were 1st at Festival of Sports, 2nd at HKRW, 9th at ASAF Youth Cup Thailand and 44th in the Silver fleet at the IODA Worlds. The Tom Larmour ‘Most Promising Young Sailor’ trophy was then presented to Douglas Leung.

Sharks Performance Sailor of the Year - Duncan Gregor

The Commodore advised that the purely results-based ‘RHKYC Sharks Performance Sailor of the Year’ award went to Duncan Gregor this year. The Commodore reported that Duncan had, for yet another year, managed to exceed expectations at local and international events. At the beginning of the season he had an injury that kept him off of the water for a significant period of time, but he managed to come back and have a very successful season. Some of his achievements in the Optimist class this season were 1st at HKRW, 5th at UK Nationals, 6th at ASAF Youth Cup Thailand and 11th at Youth Sailing Championship in Singapore. He also came 20th at the 29er Worlds earlier this year. The RHKYC Sharks Performance Sailor of the Year award was then presented to Duncan Gregor.
