ROLEX CHINA SEA RACE 2014 - BOAT INFORMATION

Niccolo Manno must be looking forward to an incident-free offshore race when he and his fellow crew set off on the Rolex China Sea Race on 16 April.  Readers may recall the last time they went offshore for the Audi Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, Krampus stepped in to rescue the crew from Walawala 2.    The passports on board are varied; the six all-men crew represent the Kiwis, the French, the Americans and there is an Italian/Austrian on board too.

This is Krampus’ first Rolex China Sea Race and skipper Niccolo says “we are still learning how to best use the boat and are enjoying it”.  He bought the boat to be more active in offshore races from Hong Kong and sees this as an excellent Race to participate in.  He’s not in it for Line Honours or a podium position “my short boat makes it very hard to get to a podium position in a water length displacement reach race so we are not fooling ourselves and would be happy to just arrive there intact and with a great race behind us.  We are looking forward to getting past the first night when it gets warmer and the water becomes blue again!”

Krampus’ last two offshore races have been memorable.    Niccolo says “whilst we didn’t win in the San Fernando Race, we certainly would have been a contender for ‘best fun onboard’ and ‘best food onboard’ courtesy of the French crew!”  And of course their second offshore came to a halt with the dramatic rescue of fellow sailors from Walawala 2.

The crew is 100% amateur sailors who enjoy sailing together and we hope this time they get to their destination!

HONG KONG TO VIETNAM RACE 2013 - BOAT INFORMATION

Krampus, Niccolo Manno’s year-old Anteros 36, has her regular crew of seven on board for the Audi Hong Kong to Vietnam Race.  Amongst the crew is Philippe Grelon (age 50) who since 2006 has held the monohull offshore world record of 2d 15h 40m 42s for his 465nm trip from Taipei to Hong Kong on his boat Johan II.  The youngest on board, at 18 years of age, is Philippe’s son, Cosmas (TBC).

This is only the second offshore race for Krampus, the first being RHKYC’s 2013 San Fernando Race.  That race was a very good experience for the crew however, as Niccolo says “we did very badly in the San Fernando in terms of ranking. Our telecommunication systems didn't work and we couldn't download weather files and got stuck in a hole. That said, we would have won the best fun onboard award! We had a great crew, excellent food and a lot of fun.”

As for the Audi Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, Niccolo says he and his crew are “looking the most to test the speed potential of the boat on downwind surfs.  It's rare to have an (expected) full downwind offshore race, so should be fun!  The biggest competition I am sure will be the Ker 40s, the GTS43 and the new HH42, i.e. Walawala, KukuKERchu, Island Fling, Signal 8...”

They may not have any sailing superstars on board - Niccolo readily admits they are all amateurs - he says they are “ working very well together and we don't expect major results against the serious competition but we'll enjoy going as fast and safely as possible."
