Steering the Course - Know more about Offshore Racing

Regatta Room | 1830hrs to 2000hrs

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to participate in an offshore sailing race? Do you wonder if offshore racing is for you? Are you signed up for an offshore race, but are not sure how to prepare? Have you wanted to know how to join an offshore racing crew, but don’t know what credentials and skills you should present? This event brings together some experienced offshore racing sailors who will explain what offshore racing entails, share tips for preparing, and regale us with stories from their adventures on the high seas.

Kicking off our sharing will be:

Laurence Mead, former director of Cowes Week, who has raced single and double-handed, as well as large-crewed boats, in numerous offshore races over his long-time professional sailing life.

Sandra Snell, who has sailed different legs of the Clipper RTW in various parts of the world, notching up many days at sea.

Nick Southward, who skippered the winning boat Whiskey Jack on this year’s Rolex China Sea Race, and has recently raced double-handed in the Fastnet race.

Inge Strompf-Jepsen, another veteran offshore racer, has skippered and crewed in many different offshore sailing circumstances.

Lucy Sutro, who is fresh from participating in her first offshore race in April this year.

This event will be interactive, so please join us if you too can share from your offshore sailing experience with those who would love to learn from you.

This event welcomes all members. There will be some specific reflections on the experience of women in offshore racing.

Steering the Course
Series of Sailing and Rowing & Paddle Sports Talks

World's Sailing's Steering the Course is a global initiative designed to bring together sailing communities, in particular women, highlighting the achievements of those already within the sport, as well as encouraging those who are new to sailing.

This is the first in a series of opportunities for members, particularly women, to get together to develop their knowledge of our core sports, as well as to get to know other people who are passionate about sailing, rowing and paddling.
