Speaker's Corner - Secrets of Underwater Wildlife Photography by Mike Korostelev

26 Sep 2023
F&B / EVENTS

Regatta Room | 1900hrs to 2100hrs

Photographer Mike Korostelev has won 2022’s European Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition for his underwater photography of hippos. This annual competition is organised by the German Society of Nature Photography (GDT).

Mike changed his career from IT to underwater and wildlife photography and has travelled around the world for many years in search of the biggest underwater animals and the most interesting ways to photograph them.

Mike is a well-known “whale whisperer”. He has captured many unique moments of the ocean’s gentle giants including a mother sperm whale feeding milk to her calf.

In addition to his wonderfully peaceful whale images, Mike will share his experiences about some of his other fascinating and unique expeditions: Underwater photography of Brown bears in Kamchatka, Hippos in South Africa, Beluga whales near the Solovetsky islands to name a few.

Mike is famous for his love of nature and his positive attitude towards everyone.
“In nature photography, I want to show how fragile nature is, and therefore how important it is to protect her and not to keep animals in captivity, especially not marine mammals”.

Mike will also share his insights on wildlife conservation: A successful story of the release of nearly 100 captive orcas and belugas from “whale jail” in Russia. And why irresponsible whale watching can be worse than the whaling industry.

Please support this important talk about the conservation of the world’s wild marine animals.
