RHKYC Charity Foundation

Through its history, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has been active in giving through members’ and staff charitable efforts to reach into the community helping children needy mariners and supporting environmental causes and consciousness in Hong Kong. To bring all these activities together under one entity, the Club officially formed the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Charity Foundation in 2012.

The Foundation seeks to:

  • Inspire, motivate and support underprivileged children and youth aged up to 24
  • Support retired mariners and other maritime communities
  • Embrace marine conservation and related initiatives
  • Support access to our core sports for physically or mentally challenged individuals

Since its inauguration, the RHKYC Charity Foundation has:

  • Helped over a thousand underprivileged children, youth and old needy old mariners
  • Provided financial and intangible support to 16 charitable organisations
  • Engaged over 100 RHKYC members and staff volunteers on various charitable activities

Support is offered through various initiatives, be it through fundraising for donations to causes or delivering positive experiences to those less fortunate either on or off the water.

For on the water activities, the Foundation organizes basic swimming lessons to deprived children and youth in Hong Kong and invited them to experience watersports and the open ocean.  Participated children and youth have a basic understanding of sailing, wind and weather as well as paddling in all of its forms, while developing their self-confidence and the importance of team work in life.  At the same time, they learn about the related environmental issues affecting our seas.  The Foundation also supports handicap sailing in Hong Kong via donations to Sailability Hong Kong.

Onshore activities for all groups cover participation in seasonal events such as the harbour fireworks, Easter Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Tin Hau Festival and Christmas activities. The Foundation’s English Book Reading Programme provides less-privileged children an opportunity to learn English outside school curriculum where they could never afford to do so.  In additional to supporting our charitable partners to deliver marine conservation education to local schools, the Foundation also organizes talks during its own events on Hong Kong marine environment protection subjects.

Other works such as sports charity open days, beach clean ups, donations of toys and school supplies, visiting old seafarers and hospital children, as well as the support we have given to various causes will continue, and will be actively built upon – with your help.

Strong values of RHKYC’s Charity Foundation rest with our specialization in sailing and rowing; our Clubhouse facilities and their proximity to the harbour and the sea; and the cultural diversity of our members and staff.  The combination of all of these makes us unique in being able to offer a wide variety of opportunities to help those in need.
