ROLEX CHINA SEA RACE 2014 - BOAT INFORMATION

87-year-old Sydney Fischer is coming back to Hong Kong to compete in April’s Rolex China Sea Race on board 90-foot super maxi, Ragamuffin 90.

Syd has had Ragamuffin 90 for two years and was last seen here for the Audi Hong Kong to Vietnam Race which saw them sail away with Line Honours and a new race record.  Ragamuffin 90 (in her previous incarnation as Genuine Risk) also took Line Honours in the 2012 edition of the Rolex China Sea Race.

A total crew of 15 men and two women hailing from Australia, New Zealand, England, Japan, Hong Kong, Sweden and the Philippines will be on board including David Witt, Team Ragamuffin’s Sailing Master who says he’s hoping “for good breeze to gives us every opportunity to break the record”.

Quite clearly they are aiming for Line Honours and a win in their division.  And who do they see as their greatest competition?  “Lucky 52” says Witty, of the boat who travelled all the way from the USA to lift the winner’s trophy in IRC Racer 0 Division on IRC handicap in the Audi Hong Kong to Vietnam Race last year.

HONG KONG TO VIETNAM RACE 2013 - BOAT INFORMATION

Ragamuffin 90 (formerly Genuine Risk) is a 90’ canting keel maxi that has just undergone a full refit (including sails, hydraulics, electrics, added daggerboards and a removal of the forward rudder) less than two months ahead of the Audi Hong Kong to Vietnam Race.

Ragamuffin 90’s crew is basically the same crew for all ‘Ragamuffin’ boats; the 90 is set up the same as the 100 so the same crew gets the best training for crew work sailing on both.  The crew for the Audi Hong Kong to Vietnam Race includes most of the winning crew from the Transpac Race held earlier this year with a few changes - the most notable of which is to welcome one of Britain’s most successful sailors Ian Walker, skipper of Volvo Ocean Race team Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing who also has two Olympic silver medals to his name.

Other sailing luminaries in the strong Ragamuffin crew include one of Australia’s most experienced and well-known yachtsmen, 86 year old Syd Fischer and 22-year-old Luke Parkinson who is currently representing Australia in the Youth America’s Cup.    Also on board is David Witt, a world-class yachtsman who previously ran Grant Wharington’s Skandia.

Ragamuffin 90, in her previous incarnation as Genuine Risk, stole the show taking Line Honours in the 2012 Rolex China Sea Race and is clearly out to win the Audi Hong Kong to Vietnam Race.  The race record of 42h 45m 41s set in 2004 still stands, and Ragamuffin’s David Witt says “we’ll be pushing hard to beat the record”.

David is a great fan of the Race - “I believe it is the best ocean race in the world to do” and he’s “looking forward to fast sailing, breaking the record and most importantly sailing with a legend like Syd again” adding, “he’s a global icon in sailing and to still be seriously competing at 86 is a true inspiration to us all - not enough can be said about the man Syd Fischer, for his contribution to sailing... and he’s also a great bloke.”
