ROLEX CHINA SEA RACE 2016 - BOAT INFORMATION

Megazip, owned by Sergey Khramtsov and chartered for the Rolex China Sea Race by Alexander Vodovatov, is a Cookson12M that will have 12 men on board for the Race.

Alexander is the team's "ideological inspirer" and his aim is to compete in all 600-mile Rolex races such as  Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, Rolex Fastnet Race, Rolex Middle Sea Race, RORC Caribbean 600, Rolex China Race and The Newport Bermuda Race.

In 2014 they competed in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race (coming first in PHS Division 1 with Art Equity Mahligai), the Rolex Fastnet Race and the RORC Caribbean 2015.

The skipper for the Rolex China Sea Race is Vladimir Chirkov a professional, sailing since childhood.  The second helmsman is Christian Kargl -   Laser World Championships Chile 1997 Minitransat 2005 on Prototype – Single-handed race 4.400 nm Watch captain VO60 “Nova One” Fastnet Race 2009 – 3rd Class Super Zero Tactician Round Palagruza Cannonball 500nm 2011 – 1st overall Tactician/Helmsman Offshore Challenge 2011 – 1st overall Tactician/Helmsman Austrian Offshore Championships 2009 – 3rd overall Skipper Class40 “GustBuster” Roma per Due 2012 – 1st overall Skipper Class 40 “Jumbo” Fastnet Race 2015 National Champion Laser, Platu 25 Weather router for different Offshore Races in Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean

There has only been one other Russian boat that took part in the China Sea Race - Carrera back in 2006 - but Megazip will be the first Russian boat in the Race under the Rolex banner.  The captain of Carrera was Mikhaylov Alexey has since passed away and Alexander "would like to pay tribute to his memory."

Alexander has heard that the Race "is interesting and difficult" and looks forward to the challenge.

He adds "Rolex China Race is the historical event for me and for the Russian team and for Russian sailing sport in general.  I am as the manager of all of these 600-mile races for our crew and I want to attract other Russian yachtsmen to these Rolex races; to popularize them. The dream of every team in a Rolex race is to get a Rolex watch Yachtmaster II!  These watches are the pieces of art! To my mind, the whole series of these 600-mile races is the good start for competing in Volvo Ocean Race. I would love that in our country the 600-miles Rolex Race will appear one day."

Alexander continues: "As the experience shows it happens seldom when you come and win. For example Sir Peter James Blake before winning Whitbread Round the World Race broke his mast must several times and was close to death. So the best way is to do step by step.  To compete well you should have a sponsor and many other things: training, to know the sea well etc. "
