Dragon boating - The Royal X Men and Women

Just who are the Royal X teams?

The Royal X-Team is part of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC), as the name suggests, and the team benefits from this association in numerous ways. The team first came in to being in 1997 when a number of paddlers from another Hong Kong-based club got together with the idea of starting their own team, the X-Men, which would focus less on intense training and more on having fun. A year later, with the departure of many of the original paddlers, the crew joined forces with the Yacht Club, hence the name  (the “Royal” denotes the RHKYC and the “X” denotes “ex”-members of other clubs). The Royal X-Women was established shortly thereafter. Over the years the dragon boat team has grown and we now field at least one men’s and one women’s crew every year at the key races of the dragon boat season, as well as a mixed team for some events.

The Royal X-Team has strong ties with the Rowing Section of the RHKYC with an overlap between members of both. Some team members are also members of the RHKYC’s outrigger canoe section, or are members of other outrigger clubs in Hong Kong. Becoming involved in any of the rowing or paddle sports which the club offers will help to make you eligible for joining the RHKYC.
