Sharks at the Minox Middle Island Regatta
On the weekend of the 21/22 April, 27 Sharks participated in the Minox Middle Island Regatta.
In the Optimist class there were 13 sailors representing RHKYC out of the 37 entries.
After 5 races we finished with 5 sailors in the top 10, with our own Calum Gregor winning overall with 5 1st's!
Not far behind were: Sophie Tulloch - 3rd, Clara Krantz - 6th, Ferdinand Heldman - 8th, James Davidson - 10th (and 3rd under 12), Malik Hood - 13th, Scarlett Manzoni - 14th, Juliana Choi - 17th, Dolf Hendriksen - 20th, Nicholas Bezy - 23rd, Emma Fung - 28th, Max Green - 31st and Tim Green 376th.
In the 29ers we saw Florrie Manzoni and Isabel Tulloch sail a good series finishing in 2nd position overall. They managed to claim two first places in the series beating the current Asian 29er Champions. Henry Salmon (Maverick) and Aymeric Gillard (Goose) were also closely behind in 3rd place.
In Division B, Sofia sailed a great series finishing 3rd overall in a Laser 4.7. She managed to keep up with or in front of some of the Radial rigs during the race - great stuff! Wilhelm finished in 5th overall, and Natalie Chan and Nicholas Hellinikakis finished in 7th in the Feva.
In Division A Jacqueline and Freya finished well in a competitive fleet in 14th place out of 28 entries.
Well done to all sailors!

Optimist Thailand Training Camp
During the Easter holidays, 8 sharks travelled to the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Thailand for a week of some intensive training.
Over the week they went right back to basics, starting by focusing on boat handling and boat speed, then working towards starting techniques and strategy and tactics towards the end of the week.
The week was a lot of fun and was a great success - don't take my word for it though! - Check out our video diaries below to see what we got up to...

Sharks at the "Zoke Around the Island Race"
On Sunday 20th November, a team of intrepid sharks entered in the Zoke Around the Island Race, alongside another 241 boats!
The team consisted of Campbell Manzoni, Sofia Mascia, Henry Salmon, Aymeric Gillard and Isabel Tulloch. Clement Lam was also there to assist the team.
The team aboard "Invictus" got off to a good start and were second in the J80 fleet up until almost the half way point. Unfortunately the team did get caught up on by some of the more experienced crews, and by the finish they were placed 6th in the fleet of 13 - a great result seeing as they'd never really sailed the boat before!
However the team really loved the experience and we hope to enter again next year.
Sharks Ferdinand Heldman, Sophie Tulloch and Clara Krantz also managed to get a ride on a big boat. Ferdinand was aboard Ambush with Drew Taylor, whilst the girls sailed with Jamie McWilliam on his Kerr 40. They too loved the experience and it was great for them to be able to watch some top sailors in action close-up.

Optimist Nationals 2011
12 Sharks participated in this years Nationals, hosted at Hebe Haven Yacht Club.
There were 38 entries in total, and the racing spanned over three days with winds gusting from almost nothing, to about 12 knots.
The racing was tricky at points and wasn't always easy to read the wind. The starts were also very competitive, with a fairly short line for the amount of boats.
The sailors sailed well though, and special mentions must go to Ferdinand Heldman and Sophie Tulloch who both sailed very consistently over the three days. Sophie finished 7th overall and won the "Coaches Trophy" for her performance and her sportsmanlike behaviour. Ferdinand finished 13th and was 3rd under 12.
Milo Walshe also finished 1st in the Novice category in 23rd place.
Well done to the whole team! All sailors showed a great performance.

Benoy 24hr Charity Race
A team of 25 sharks entered the 24hr race on the 1st/2nd October, sailing in the Feva and Laser 2000 divisions.
Many sailors really got into the spirit of things by wearing fancy fress. Costumes included a Tiger, Horse, Monkey, Ladybird, Penguin and a Chicken! Even Nick wore a Shark costume!
The sailors sailed very hard through the event having a lot of fun along the way. After being in second place in both divisions for half of the race, the Sharks hard work and determination finally paid off and both teams climbed up to first place. They managed to stay there for the remainder of the race - well done guys! It was a huge team effort, and every single sailor in the team was a key part towards the victory. It is estimated that the Sharks raised 40,000 for Charity! Bring on next year!

RHKYC Sharks Summer 2011 News
Just incase you’ve been marooned on a desert island, we’ve had some sailors away at regatta’s over the summer.
Clara and Sophie (with Richard) went to the Asian Optimist Championships against some real stiff competition. Asia are currently regarded as the leading continent in Optimist sailing.
They finished in 103rd (Sophie) and 115th (Clara). The results however don’t paint the whole picture, and both sailors were really getting into the mix well. I’m sure this will help their sailing on a National level – well done girls!

In the same week but in Holland, Nick took a team to the Feva worlds. It consisted of Scarlett, Florrie and Campbell Manzoni, and Ferdi and Aymeric. Nick’s brother also stepped in as a last minute replacement to sail with Scarlett.
There were 160 boats from 13 nations, and the team sailed in winds from 0 knots, to 25+!!
All team members sailed very well. Top was Scarlett with Matt in 19th place!... next was Florrie and Campbell in 34th! And then Ferdi and Aymeric in 20th silver fleet (70th overall). So all teams finished in the top half. Well done!
Florrie and Campbell also represented HK in the “Nations Cup”. This event consisted of the best team from each nation. They finished a fantastic 3rd overall!!
