Boatyard

The Boatyard’s principle raison d’être is to provide critical repair and maintenance facilities for our member’s yachts so they can participate in events organised by the Club.

Offering a “one stop shop” for most maintenance tasks, the Boatyard handles the commissioning of many new yachts, provides engine service, mechanical repairs, rig maintenance, running rigging and major structural fiberglass repairs and offers repairs and service for the more than 150 Class Yachts resident at the Club

Our antifouling work is first rate, and we believe we offer the best bottom paint job in Asia. Meanwhile the yard also.

Excluding admin staff the Boatyard currently operates with thirteen full time employees and three semi permanent subcontractor workers. The yard team is comprised of a three man team that handles the lifting, washing and chocking of boats plus general yard labour, one rigger, three mechanics / engineers, two fiberglass technicians, three painters, one carpenter and the three sub contractors who carry out the preparation for antifouling and deck and topside polishing.

With our 35 Ton travel lift and 25 Ton crane the Boatyard is able to lift, chock, wash and anti-foul over 200 vessels, ranging from 30 foot cruising yachts thru to 75 foot grand prix racing yachts, each year.

In addition to this we also provide a variety of hardstand services including but not limited to:

  • Engineering - Our machine shop includes a lathe, pillar drill, aluminum and stainless welding and fabrication, as well as a wide assortment of specialist tools. We also provide service for hydraulics, electrical installations, generator and engine installations, diesel repairs and much more.
  • Fiberglass and Gel-coat repairs - Our GRP shop can handle a wide range of tasks to a high level of finish. We carry a wide range of glass cloths (including carbon and Kevlar) and have the facilities to make major or minor repairs.
  • Rigging - Our riggers can produce all forms of splicing in both hi tech (core to core) and traditional (cover to core, wire to rope and multi strand) splicing. We are also on hand to assist with mast tuning and deck layout works as required.
Due to the broad variety and complexity of RHKYC member yachts, projects handled by the Boatyard can present interesting challenges, with extreme fluctuations in the man power and skill sets required.

Guidelines for scheduling work sees priority given to the yacht or equipment belonging to a member that will be participating in a major race or regatta organized by the RHKYC, but at the end of the day, we work hard to accommodate all requests, large and small.

The Boatyard runs a booking system for the hard standing with the usage of space often planned up to three months in advance. We have accurate records of when we last anti fouled our members’ yachts and now send out reminders annually. We are taking a proactive approach to ensure that we have a balanced amount of work that takes into consideration the big picture needs of all members and the need to run a cost effective boat yard.
