The annual Around the Island Race (26nm/46km around Hong Kong Island ) will be held on Sunday November 11, 2012.
RHKYC welcomes local and international crews for outrigging (OC6) and coastal rowing (Eurodiffusions 'yole' style crew boats) to join the sailing fleet in one of the largest events in the Club's calendar.
Starting and finishing at the RHKYC Middle Island location, this unique event offers the chance to experience a wide range of conditions as you travel around Hong Kong. The rough and unpredictable waters of Victoria Harbour have even surprised paddlers used to the bigger seas in Australia and Hawaii. The 'southside' of Hong Kong offers beautiful scenery and the chance to race through the large fleet of sailing boats taking part in the traditional section of the event.
After racing all the competitors enjoy a relaxing drink and a well earned BBQ dinner on the lawn and deck of the Middle Island clubhouse.
Racing Divisions
Outrigger Canoe:
-
Men's, Women's and Mixed OC6 (change race format)
(There are no small boat divisions at this time due to safety requirements and the difficulty in obtaining permits from the HK Government)
Coastal Rowing:
-
Men's, Women's and Mixed 4x
-
Men's and Women's 2x
Last year we offered for the first time a 'change' event for the 4x (where the crew can be changed at one point along the course) that proved to be very popular and successful.

Race Briefing
The briefing will be held on a day prior to the event (details TBC), and a representative from each club must attend to hear the briefing and to collect the crew packs.
International crews who are keen to race should contact the Club to obtain more details about boat hire and logistics.

Thank you to all crews in what was a record sized entry for both outrigger and coastal rowing. Racing between 19 canoes and 6 rowing boats was always going to be exciting, but the hard fought finishes in many divisions and two record times were a fantastic spectacle.
Congratulations to HKIPC in the Men's and Women's OC6. HKOCC took a hard fought win in the Mixed OC6. Two RHKYC crews took the fastest times for the men's and women's coastal rowing, both setting records in the process. Well done to the Hong Kong Sea School students who competed in the mixed rowing after only learning how to row in the past two months.
